From 8 June 2015, the paper counterpart to the UK Photocard driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA. After 8 June, if you want to rent a car you will have to log on to the DVLA website at https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence and generate a one-time passcode – valid for 72 hours – which you give to the hire company. The check code will allow someone to see what vehicles you can drive, any penalty points or disqualifications, your name and the last 8 characters of your driving licence number.
